MAHARASHTRA LAVANI
Lavani is a famous folk dance and music style that originated in Maharashtra. It is known for its rhythmic beats, expressive facial movements, and vibrant costumes. The word Lavani comes from the word ‘Lavanya’, meaning beauty, and true to its name, this dance form showcases the grace, beauty, and emotions of the performer.
This dance is usually performed by women wearing a traditional nine-yard saree, heavy jewelry, and ghungroos. The main musical instrument used is the dholki, which gives Lavani its powerful rhythm. The performances are filled with emotion, expressions, and sometimes even humor or social messages.
Lavani became very popular during the Peshwa rule in the 18th century. It was used to entertain soldiers and later became a major part of the Tamasha theatre tradition. Today, it is performed on big stages, in movies, and during cultural festivals.
